The water heater or boiler is a device that allows you to heat water for domestic use independently. When there is no centralized hot water system in a home, the only solution is to install a water heater.

Water heaters can be divided into two macro-types :

  • storage water heaters which usually include electric ones and heat pump ones;
  • instantaneous water heaters which are usually gas-fired.

Those with accumulation heat the water contained inside a tank by means of a resistance, which will then be released at the time of use; the instantaneous ones are activated when the taps are opened, therefore the production of hot water takes place at the moment of the actual request by the user.

Another very important differentiation between water heaters is therefore given by the type of power supply . In fact we can have:

  • the gas water heater ;
  • the electric water heater .

Below is an in-depth description.

ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS of the classic type are the ones that cost less . They are powered by electricity but in use they are the ones that are cheaper because they absorb a lot of electricity, they do not produce any kind of drain. They are storage water heaters , they exist from 10 - 15 - 30 - 50 - 80 - 100 - 110 - 200 - 250 liters and are chosen based on the maximum amount of hot water that can be served in about two hours; on average, an 80-liter water heater takes about two to two and a half hours to heat the water which, if all of it is used up in a short time (example: up to two or three people showering one after the other) , ends and then you have to wait for it to be heated again.

The INSTANT WATER HEATERS cost a little more than the classic electric ones. They can be powered by natural gas or by LPG gas / propane air (they must be chosen according to the type of gas available), they can be of the open chamber type for installation exclusively outside the house or with a sealed chamber for installation both inside and outside the house, they produce exhaust gases. There are 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 17 - 20 - 28 liters per minute and are chosen based on how much water is needed instantly and therefore based on how many taps can be opened at the same time; since they are instantaneous, when the tap is opened they automatically start producing hot water until the tap is closed.

HEAT PUMP WATER HEATERS cost even more. They are powered by electricity and in use they are the ones that are most convenient because to heat the water they use the latent heat already present in the air and absorb very little electricity but they can also function as a normal electric water heater. They are storage water heaters , they exist from 80 - 100 - 110 - 200 - 250 - 300 liters and are chosen based on the maximum amount of hot water that can be served in about six - nine hours because in the heat pump function they have long heating times or to the maximum amount of hot water that can be used in about two - three hours when used in the electrical function which has much shorter heating times; on average, an 80-liter water heater takes eight hours - nine hours to heat the water which, if all of it is used up in a short time (e.g. two or three people showering one after the other), runs out and then you have to wait to be heated again.

From the point of view of costs, the electric water heater has more advantageous prices , but since it is powered by electricity it has higher consumption. The gas, methane or LPG / propane air water heater has a slightly higher price, but lower running costs. The one with the best running costs is the heat pump water heater.
